Fundamental Practice Guide
Core Riding Rules – “Own It”
• Eyes Up
• Knees In (especially when standing)
• Elbows Up
• Core On
Body Position & Balance
Acceleration / Deceleration
• Tip forward when accelerating
• Push back when braking
• Stay strong — timing is key
Braking Technique Standing position
• Butt back
• Use both brakes
• Brake at comfortable speed while standing
• Shift weight rearward as braking increases
• Faster speed = move further back
• Grip bike with knees
• Keep eyes up
Practice Drills
• Rear brake skids
• Straight line skids
• Skid + turn
• Practice seated & standing
Cornering – (Except sand → weight back)
•Weight forward
•Eyes through turn
•Elbows up (outside elbow)
•Leg out (inside leg, straight, high, no dragging)
•Smooth throttle
•Flat Turns
•Let bike lean while body stays vertical
Extra Skills to Practice
• Bump Starts • Hill Starts
• Turning Around on Hills
Clutch Pop / Controlled Monos
• Roll throttle on as clutch releases
• Maintain balance momentum
• Use enough revs to avoid stalling
Short Power Curve – Lifts front wheel with minimal speed
Long Power Curve – Lifts wheel but increases speed
✔ Practice 1st & 2nd gear
✔ Practice rear brake to bring wheel down
Body Position
• Sit back for front wheel lift
• Avoid locked arms (loss of control) Logs Technique
• Use clutch pop mono
• Begin lift early to tap top of log Safe Log Crossing
• Logs ≤ ⅔ front wheel height
• Stand preferred (sitting OK)
• Elbows up
• Core on
• Eyes up
• Knees in
• Maintain steady throttle
• Approach straight
Gullies
• Eyes up
• Knees in
• Stand
• Elbows up
• Smooth throttle control
• Uphill = tip forward
• Downhill = push back
• Roll throttle at bottom
• Avoid braking into gully base
